How much does it cost to dry grain?
Typically, it takes about 3 litres of gas to dry 1 tonne of grain by 1%. Oil-fired dryers are slightly less efficient, and oil is currently more expensive than gas. The average price of gas in the UK is currently £0.74 per litre (18 July 2022) – this means it costs £2.22 to dry 1% of grain.
What temperature should the grain dryer be?
Maltsters, millers and seed producers require grain temperatures not exceeding 50°C. Do not leave the grain in the dryer for too long. Ensure there is adequate airflow. After drying, cool the grain to prevent the growth of insects and mites.

Drying is a mass transfer process that removes water or other solvents from solids, semisolids, or liquids by evaporation.
